Simple Dr.Seuss Crafts and Activities for Preschoolers

Dr. Seuss has always been a favourite author in our house. We love the silly stories, lyrical language and rhymes. So, in celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday (which is March 2), today I am sharing a few of our favourite Dr. Seuss crafts and activities. They are perfect for Preschoolers, but older children will like them too!

The Cat in the Hat is a fun story with lots of simple rhyming words. It's one of the first stories my beginner readers enjoyed reading on their own. This cat craft uses a paper plate and a paper hat full of stripes containing words ending in "at". Cute, right?

And this fun craft involves kids gluing strips of paper and a bow tie onto a simple, hand-drawn picture of the Cat in the Hat.

And is there anything cuter than incorporating a child's photo into a craft. With some simple shapes, and a picture of the child, it is easy to make a Thing 1 craft that kids will love. Scrunch up some 1 inch squares of tissue paper to make the hair.

The Lorax is another one of our favourites. You can't beat a story that focusses on being kind to the environment. Celebrate this story by going for a nature walk and sticking a newly broken branch in water and watching it bloom.

And you can't talk about Dr. Seuss without talking about "Green, Eggs, and Ham". This was always one of my favourite books to read to my boys. Find out how to make an adorable green eggs snack here.

And finally, check out these wonderful "One fish two fish" snacks and activities. It's simple to make "fish" sandwiches using fish-shaped cookie cutters... and don't forget to add a side of goldfish. 

You can also pretend to fish using a clothespin on a stick, paper fish, and gummy worms. My boys LOVED this!

These Dr. Seuss crafts and activities are wonderful for celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday... but they are fun any time. Grab your favourite book, and follow it up with one of these fun crafts or activities. Your kids will love it!

Number Crafts {Number TWO}... Butterfly and Fish Crafts

I have started a Craft Club in my home for preschoolers, and we are doing different number crafts each week. This week, we are focusing on the NUMBER TWO, and we are crafting a butterfly (with two wings), two handprint fish (inspired by the Dr. Seuss book One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish), and a magic wand.

To make the fish:

1)  Download and print the template for the "One Fish Two Fish" craft, which you can find here.
2)  Trace the child's hands onto the sheet.
3)  Have the child color the fish, and finish by adding googly eyes.


To make the butterfly:

1)  Draw butterfly wings on a piece of card stock, and cut them out.
2)  Punch or cut holes in the wings.
3)  Glue tissue paper over the hearts.
4)  Attach a popsicle stick and googly eyes.

You can also add this little poem to the back.  To download a copy of the poem, right-click on the picture below, save it to your computer, and print like a regular 8X10 photo.

To make the number two magic wand:

1) Draw a circle containing the number two and have the children decorate it and it cut it out.

2) Tape some ribbon and a paper straw to the back.

Making a duck out of a "number two" is another adorable craft for Preschoolers. Color a two, and then add a feather wing, an eye, a head, and a beak. Cute, right?

We also did some printing practice, and used a stamp to "stamp out" the number two.

Inspired by The Lorax

During a walk through the woods, the boys and I found a broken tree branch with some unopened buds on it.  We took it home and stuck it in some water.  The buds are now growing into leaves, and the boys are really enjoying watching a tree bloom {up close}!

Our branch inspired us to read a book about the importance of taking care of our forests.  Don't you just love The Lorax?  {It is a wonderful Dr.Seuss book with a great message for kids.}

And, of course, we needed a fun and easy snack.  We made cupcakes and topped them with green icing and little "trees" {spearmint leaf candies on pretzel sticks}.

A walk, a book, and a little sweet treat -- not a bad way to spend a Spring afternoon.  :-)

Dr. Seuss Inspired Fun

In this house, we love Dr. Seuss.  The combination of rhyming and silliness is simply irresistible.  So, a couple of days ago, we gathered up some of our favorite books and had some Dr. Seuss inspired fun!

THE CRAFT:  We started out by making some "Cat in the Hat" hats.  To make the hats:  

1)  Cut a circle out of the center of a paper plate.

2)  Tape the ends of two pieces of card stock together.  Then, have the kids color stripes onto the paper.

3)  Tape the ends of the paper together (to form a cylinder), and attach it to the paper plate with tape.


THE SNACK:  For a snack, we made these simple "green eggs" {from "Green Eggs and Ham"}.

To make the eggs:

1)  Melt white chocolate chips in a bowl.  (1-2 minutes in the microwave on 50% power)

2)  Use a squeeze bottle filled with white chocolate to make an "egg" shape onto a sheet of wax paper.

3)  Give the wax paper a gentle shake to smooth out the chocolate, add a green Smartie, and allow to cool completely.  (Special thanks to Little Warriors for the snack time inspiration.)

THE LUNCH:  For lunch we had "Grinch" juice (milk with green food coloring) and "One Fish Two Fish" Sandwiches.

We had a great day reading, crafting and eating.  Thank you, Dr.Seuss!  :-)
